Administration Considerations Flashcards

1
Q

What are Oral administration considerations?

A

temperament
Given with food or water? E.G: Metacam to be given with food/Pimobendan to be given 1 hour before food)
Patient appetite
Equipment needed to support adminsitration- pill popper
Brachycephalic breeds – risk of aspiration pneumonia

Q

What are Intranasal administration considerations?

A

Fast absorption
Kennel cough vaccine & inhalers are administered intranasally
Need to be able to get close enough to the patient. Muzzles would be a barrier to the area we would need to access- restricted to calm temperament

Q

What are Topical administration considerations?

A

Easy to apply, non-invasive, and application can be targeted to the exact site it is required

PPE- (zoonosis? E.g. ringworm

Slow absorption rate
Ophthalmic treatments (eyes) require frequent applications due to the production of tears

Ear and eye conditions can be painful, so care needs to be taken when applying these treatments- patient restrained.

Q

What are Rectal administration considerations?

A

Useful when other routes are inappropriate (e.g. using rectal diazepam instead of oral diazepam in a siezuring dog)

instead if a particular drug causes GI tract irritation
Not suitable for animals with diarrhoea or severe dehydration

Absorption rate can be irregular = variable effect
Low owner compliance for home use

Q

What are SC Injection administration considerations?

A

Animal temperament
Large doses need to be given in multiple injection sites for quicker absorption (e.g. SC fluids)
Is owner competent for SC home injections?

needlestick injuries
infection, inflammation and swelling at the injection site

Uncomfortable for some animals (some drugs sting)
30’C-40’C angle of injection

Q

What are IV Injection administration considerations?

A

Should only be administered by MRCVS, RVN’s & SVN’s

Quicker absorption than SC and IM administration
Often used when giving sedatives, opioids, and induction agents
