Exam 6 Material (Organ Systems, Homeostasis, and Temperature Regulation) Flashcards
How many organ systems are there?
11
Which organ system is associated with the removal of excess water/the retention of water/along with the removal of various waste products (especially those made of nitrogen/made with nitrogen)?
Urinary system
Which organ system deals with reproduction?
Reproductive system
Why is maintaining homeostasis important?
Many animals work best at a certain temperature (b/c certain enzymes and processes work best at certain temperatures)
Which type of animal is being described?:
- For some animals to maintain a temperature necessary to conduct the physiological responses the body must perform, they seek heat from their external environment (they will often exhibit behaviors to help increase the likelihood of being at the temperature they need to be at)
Ectotherms
Which type of animal is being described?:
- animals that use homeostatic mechanisms to maintain their body temperature (will have certain structures like feathers, hair, or big ears/exhibit behaviors like panting or sweating)/do not seek heat from their external environment
Endotherms
What is being described?:
- torpor (basically hibernation/overnight hibernation—-lowers their body temperature so that it’s closer to the outside environment/almost becomes like an ectotherm/allows them to expend less energy),
- hibernation (reducing their metabolic energy)
Coping mechanisms to help maintain homeostasis
What is it called/what will form when you collect similar or associated tissues?
Organs
What is it called/what will form when you have a collection of similar organs performing coordinated or similar functions?
Organ System
Which organ system includes skin and hair?
Integumentary system
Which organ system includes bone and cartilage?
skeletal system
Which organ system includes skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles?
Muscular system
Which organ system work in close coordination w/ the cardiovascular system and helps important immune cells circulate throughout the body as well as recover old dead cells immune cells/capture fluid that escapes the cardiovascular system?
immune and lymphatic systems
Which organ system includes organs and tissues that circulate blood throughout the body?
Cardiovascular system
Which organ system is associated w/ the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide with various organs and structures supporting this?
Respiratory system
