Exam 5 Material (Cnidarians: Type of Sponge) Flashcards
What kind of symmetry do cnidarians have?
Radial symmetry
What is surrounding the mouth of cnidarians?
Tentacles
What are the four classes of cnidarians?
Hydrozoa, schyphozoa, cubozoa, and anthozoa
What are the two basic body shapes of cnidarians?
Polyp and medusa
Which body shape is being described (has the mouth facing upright)?
Polyp
Which body shape is being described (typically thought of as a jellyfish/is upside down/the mouth facing downward)?
Medusa
What are the specialized cells that have nematocysts in them (in cnidarians)?
Cnidocytes
What are like little harpoons that shoot out the cell (there’s a little trigger and it shoots the nematocytes out of the nematocyte and this may have venom/is toxic/are sticky/hooks or spikes/wraps around things/often used for capturing prey) (in cnidarians)?
Nematocytes
Are cnidarians diploblastic or triploblastic?
Diploblastic (two tissue layers—ectoderm and endoderm)
What does the endoderm turn to?
gastrodermis
What does the ectoderm turn to?
epidermis
What is being described (cnidarians can have nerve cells b/c the ectoderm makes this nervous tissue)?
Nerve nets
What kind of nervous system do cnidarians have?
Simple (nerve nets connecting to sensory cells that connect to cells called contractile cells as well as gland cells/contractile cells allow them to move)
Do cnidarians have muscle?
No (b/c they lack mesoderm)
Where are the contractile cells?
Epidermis and gastrodermis
