Exam 5 (Sponge-Phylum Porifera: Reproduction) Flashcards
How can sponges reproduce?
Sexually and asexually
Which reproduction is being described (they can simply reproduce by having small fragments break off and grow up to be a new sponge—sometimes the smaller sponge will bud off of the main body of the sponge through mitosis and form a whole separate sponge)?
Asexual reproduction
Which reproduction is being described (most sponges are homophartic/have both male and female reproductive structures, the amoeboid cells can develop into eggs OR sperm/usually produce them at different times in the same sponge to prevent selfing, the fertilization and early development of the zygote and embryo is inside of the mesophyle where the amoeboid cells are/that grows into a flagallent larvae w/ flagella that swims away w/ the outflowing water out the ossculum and it grows up to be a sponge)?
