Listening to the symptom; trying to find the best use of voice in the presence of a disorder and modifying/improving the voice
Symptomatic voice therapy
Used to enhance the patient’s listening to their voice
Auditory feedback
Doing a behavior wrong; helps with the auditory sensory feedback
Negative practice
What does negative practice tell us?
If they do it wrong and then do it correctly, the patient is able to make the adjustment by themselves
Explaining the voice problem to the patient
Counseling
The hole in the neck to help you breath; vocal folds and voice structures are still intact
Tracheostomy
Removal of the larynx; voice structures are not intact
Laryngectomy
What condition is common for having laryngectomies?
Cancer of the larynx; laryngeal cancer is so deep that radiation/chemotherapy will not be effective
What part of the larynx is removed during a laryngectomy?
Epiglottis to 2nd tracheal ring
What 2 pathways is completely separated during a laryngectomy?
Swallowing and breathing
Permanent opening in the neck that allows air to come in and out of the lungs
Stoma
What are the options of communication after a laryngectomy?
Esophageal speech, artificial larynx (electrolarynx)
What are some safety issues with a laryngectomy?
Water entering the stoma during swimming and showering
Trapping air into the mouth and injecting air into the esophagus which vibrates the esophagus and bringing air back up to produce sound
Esophageal speech
Handheld device that is put onto a skin and vibrates the tissue to produce sound; robotic sounding
