What are the characteristics of an otolaryngologist assessment?
Indirect, direct
Any way to look at the patient’s larynx with the patient being awake

What are the types of indirect laryngoscopy?
Laryngeal mirror, flexible or rigid scope, endoscopy, stroboscophy,
Mirror used to see the larynx that is reflected off of the otolaryngologist’s head mirror

What are the disadvantages of a laryngeal mirror?
Small view, gagging/vomiting could occur
Tube that can be passed transnasally to view the velopharyngeal mechanism, vocal folds, and laryngeal region
Endoscopy
What are the disadvantages of endoscopy?
Limited amount of light
What can be viewed on an endoscopy?
Velopharyngeal mechanism, vocal folds, laryngeal region
Using a flexible or rigid scope under a strobe light; picks up vocal fold vibration
Stroboscopy
Taking the patient to the (operating room) OR and looking at their vocal folds
Direct laryngoscopy
What is one issue with assessing someone in the OR?
Cannot assess the physiology of voice, very expensive
When is a necessary time for using direct laryngoscopy?
If you cannot get a scope in, need to go in to do a biopsy
What is included in an SLP’s assessment for voice?
Case history, hearing screening, quantification of the voice, listening and observing vocal behavior
Part of a voice assessment that includes medical assessment, story of the patient, medical chart, social life
