Aspiration
Acute inflammation of the lungs caused by foreign material entering the lung tissue and resulting in infection
Aspiration pneumonia
When does aspiration pneumonia occur?
Food or liquid sits in the lungs and creates bacteria that causes an infection; coughing occurring
What is a big risk factor for patients who have dysphagia and why?
Oral hygiene; mouth has a lot of bacteria
What are the potential members of a dysphagia team?
Doctor, family, OT, neurologist, SLP, otolaryngologist, respiratory therapist, nutritionist, dietitian
Part of the dysphagia team that helps with counseling, discharge plans, and emotional support for the patient and family

What skills are needed for SLPs to treat dysphagia?
Identify people at risk for dysphagia, conduct and interpret clinical assessments and evaluations for dysphagia, develop intervention strategies, document care and discharge planning, provide training, education, counseling to patients
Who might make referrals for patients who are suspected of having dysphagia?
CNA, OT, PT, dietitians
What are some potential problems during a bedside swallowing screening?
Don’t know what’s going on inside during swallowing (anatomy)

What is the cause of dysphagia?
Same as for motor speech disorders and cognitive disorders
What are some causes of dysphagia in children?
Low birth rate, heart disease, airway problems, meningitis, encephalopathy, CP
What are some causes of dysphagia in adults?
CVA, TBI, Parkinson’s, MS, muscular dystrophy, dementia
What are some oral preparatory phase disorders?
Poor labial seal, premature spillage, weak tongue for propelling bolus
