Exam 2 Part 4 Flashcards
What happens during the oral preparatory phase?
salivation, bolus is formed, bolus is prepared for swallowing, being able to get food/liquid off of a utensil, breathing through nose begins
What is the main job of the oral preparatory phase?
Manipulate the the food/liquid into a bolus in order to begin swallowing
What are some oral preparatory phase disorders?
Dementia may not recognize feeding situation, TBI, those with stroke may not be able to get food off utensil, lack of saliva to form bolus, weak lip closure due to stroke
What is the purpose of salivation?
Breaking down food, beginning of digestion, form bolus
What type of motion do we use during chewing?
Rotary
What happens during the oral transit phase?
Tongue begins the propulsion of the bolus to the pharynx, oral pharynx and tongue are stimulated, pharyngeal swallowing gets started
What happens during the pharyngeal stage?
Complete closure of the velopharyngeal port, elevation of the hyoid and larynx, vocal fold closure, relaxation of the cricopharyngeus muscle
Where does the pharyngeal phase begin and end?
Faucial pillars, hypo pharynx
Stroke damage in the ____ would result in an absent swallow response
Brainstem
You need a _____ stimulus to begin swallowing but swallowing is _____
Voluntary, involuntary
How does epiglottic closure occur?
Tongue pushes food back, airway and epiglottis meet and closure occurs
Food or liquid goes down the wrong way and the larynx has no sensation to know that food or liquid has gone down the wrong way; no cough response to get rid of food
Quiet aspiration
What happens during the esophageal phase?
Bolus enters the UES, peristalsis occurs and gravity helps to push the bolus down to the stomach, LES relaxes and allows bolus to get to the stomach
Where does the esophageal phase start and end?
Upper esophageal sphincter, lower esophageal sphincter
