Exam 4 Flashcards
Femoral triangle contents
Lateral to medial
- Femoral nerve and its terminal branches
- Femoral artery and several of its branches
- Femoral vein and its proximal tributaries (great sapheous vein and profunda femoris vein)
- Femoral canal
- Deep inguinal lymph nodes and associated lymphathic vessels
Femoral triangle
Superiorly: inguinal ligament–>base
Medially: adductor longus
Laterally: sartorius–>apex where the medial border of sartorius crosses the lateral border of the adductor longus
Floor: iliopsoas laterally and pectineus medially
Roof: fascia lata, cribiform fascia, subcutaneous tissue, skin
Adductor canal
extends from the apex of the femoral triangle to the adductor hiatus in the tendon of adductor magnus, provides an intermuscular passage for the femoral artery and vein, the saphenous nerve, and the nerve to vastus medialis, delivering the femoral vessels to the popliteal fossa where they become popliteal vessels
Popliteal fossa bounded by
Biceps femoris superolaterally,
semimembranous superomedially,
lateral and medial heads of gastrocnemius, inferolaterally/inferomedially,
skin and popliteal fascia posteriorly (roof),
popliteal surface of the femur, posterior capsule of the knee joint and the popliteus muscle (floor)
Contents of the popliteal fossa
termination of the small saphenous vein,
popliteal artery and vein and their branches and tributaries,
tibial and common fibular nerves,
posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh,
popliteal lymph nodes and lympathic vessels,
fat
Popliteal fascia is continuous with
fasia lata superiorly and deep (crural) fascia of the leg inferiorly
Popliteal artery is a continuation of the
femoral artery beginning where the femoral artery passes through the adductor hiatus–>passes through the popliteal fossa and ends at the inferior border of the popliteus and divides into anterior and posterior tibial arteries
Sciatic nerve ends at
superior angle of popliteal fossa and divides into tibial and common fibular nerves
Boundaries of the adductor canal
anteriorly and laterallu: vastus medialis
posteriorly: adductor longus and adductor magnus
medially: sartorius which overlies the groove between the above muscles, forming the roof of the canal
Pea anserinus
Insertion of sartorius, gracilis and semitendinous
