PNF stands for
Proprioception neuromuscular facilitation
Details on PNF
~Movement that facilitates increase ROM, strength, etc
~Can be used on all patients (shoulders, knee, strokes, balances issue); not just in neuro pts
~An exercise to show just how weak they are
Essential components of PNF
~Manual contact ~Body position and body mechanics ~Stretch ~Manual resistance ~Irradiation ~Joint facilitation ~Timing of movement ~Patterns of movement ~Visual cues ~Verbal input
Manual contact
~Lumbrical grip
~Contact over the part of the body that you are going to be using
~A lot of time pts will push into you reflexively
Body position and body mechanics
~Huge for both you and the pt
~Line hips up with the limb
Stretch
~If you stretch a muscle really quick- get a myotactic reflex
~causes them to contract
Manual resistance
~How much you are resisting that motion
~This is great bc there is no machine that can change the amount of resistance applied we can
~Need to know how much the pt can handle
~Is the pt trying get more strength or just ROM
Irradiation
~Big principle- overflow
~If you cant DF- your body will know that it has proximal and if it keeps using the proximal, it can use can overflow to the distal muscles and can possibly have some DF
~Get firing into the muscle from the spread of muscle activity
~Good for stroke pts
Joint facilitation
2 types: compress or distract
Joint facilitation: Compression
~stabilizes the jt
~contracts the muscles around the jt
~If you want to try and get the muscle to fire- jt approximation and push- should have muscle firing
Joint facilitation: Distraction-
~creates space
~relaxes the muscle
~inhibits muscle contraction
Timing of movement
~Try to do movement patterns at a relative, normal, smooth movement
~timed well enough so that the pt can follow with you
Patterns of movement
D1, D2, anterior and posterior for scap and pelvic girdle
Visual cues
Have the pt look at the limb
Verbal input
Knowing what you are saying, talking the pt through the motion
