EXAM 2 - Ch. 6 Basic Structure within the Therapeutic Process Flashcards
What are three management concepts related to therapy structure?
- Time frames for therapy
- Individual versus group therapy
- Heterogeneous versus homogenous groups
What is “frequency of thearpy”?
How often a client is seen
What is “duration of therapy”?
How much time per week a client is seen (typically in minutes)
What does the frequency and duration for each client depend on? (AKA frequency and duration indicators)
a) Type and severity of client’s S-L disorder
b) Customary practices in the service facility
c) Client’s tolerance and stamina for tx.
What three factors must you consider when scheduling frequency and duration? (frequency and duration factors)
- Schedule sessions to optimize effectiveness of tx
- Coordinate speech and language services with other services
- Allow time for indirect services (paperwork, evals, conferences, & breaks)
What four more additional factors for frequency and duration of therapy?
- Client’s support system
- Client’s financial resources
- Time requirements needed for specific program or techniques.
- Model of services
What are the four model of services?
- Pull-out
- Collaborative
- Consultative
- Pul-in (push-in)
- Special day class
What are pull out services?
Take client out of typical setting (such as the classroom)
What are collaborative services?
working with the teacher in the classroom
what are consultative service?
talking to others, such as parents, teachers, and other professionals to address the needs of the client on a limited direct contact basis.
what are pull-in services? (AKA push-in)
occurs in the classroom in which the SLP works individually or in a small group with the student.
Besides individual tx, what are the other two types?
- group
- combination
what are the two types of group therapies?
Homogenous and Heterogeneous groups
What is homogeneous group tx?
therapy groups in which all clients are working on the same or similar objectives.
What is heterogeneous group tx?
therapy in which all clients are working on different objectives, often from different disability categories (semantics, fluency, etc…)
What are the three basic components of a therapy session?
a) intro
b) body
c) closing
What components make up the intro of a session?
- Greeting and rapport
- Review of previous session
- Collection of or mentoring of homework
How long should the intro be?
2-3 minutes!
What components make up the body of a session? (where the actual work occurs)
- establishment phase
- eliciting and recording phase
- teaching phase
About how long should the body of a 30 minute session be?
24-26 minutes
What four things occur in the establishment phase of the body of a session?
- state the objective
- mini-demonstration
- baseline of client’s skills
- start work from baseline
why are the establishment steps important?
so that you can catch regression-recoupment
what is regression-recoupment and why does it occur?
a) the success that the client gains in therapy wears off between sessions.
b) occurs if the time between therapy sessions is too great.
What does the SLP have to do if regression-recoupment occurs?
- Must reteach skills. Use data to determine the level of treatment.
- Must adjust treatment plants to accommodate regression-recoupment in some clients.
