What are ‘procedures’ designed to do?
Heal or cure.
What do SLPs work to do?
To improve quality of life by reducing impairments of body functions and structures, activity limitation, participation restrictions, and environmental barriers of individuals they serve.
Are SLPs viewed as healing or curing?
NO. We prevent, diagnose, habilitate, rehabilitate, & enhance the skills, activities, structures, & functions of clients.
Define the therapeutic process.
Broad-based procedures, activities, and interactions with clients that are designed for the intervention of communication disorders.

What is the best way to build confidence?
Through experience! (Both positive and negative experiences teach.)
To build confidence, as a student you are encouraged to do three things. What are they?
a) gather information & build rapport
b) interpret findings
c) develop conclusions with appropriate rationales (reach conclusions about where to start, behavior techniques, etc…)
You can begin to understand concepts related to the profession while building confidence through repeated exercises in systematic… (4 areas)

What are three suggestions for building confidence in the therapy process?
- Read client files from beginning to end
- Talk to former clients (if available)
- Develop relationships with professionals for observations in the same setting.
What are 10 things you can practice to build your confidence?
- Practice communicative style to introduce yourself
- Practice your handshake
- Practice appropriate business eye contact
- Be sure you are in comfortable attire (non-distracting clothing)
- Be familiar with intake data
- Be familiar with forms
- Plan for all aspects of treatment
- Practice the session
- Determine if contact with caregivers will be possible.
- Practice as if someone is taking notes on every aspect.

ASHA Principle III
Individuals shall honor their responsibility to the public by promoting public understanding of the professions, by supporting the development of survices designed to fulfil the unmet needs of the public, and by providing accurate info in all communications involving any aspect of the professions, including the dissemination of research findings & scholarly activities, and the promotion, marketing, and advertising of product and services.
[AKA tell the public about what we do; i.e. teachers, parents, etc… Often people don’t know that we help develop language skills]
ASHA Principle IV
Individuals shall honor their responsibility to the professions and their relationships with colleagues, students, and members of other professions and disciplines.
[AKA every SLP approaches things differently, so try to keep cool and be professional with everybody, even if they do things differently than you do.]
What is EHA?

To include 0-5 year olds.
In 1990, the title of EHA changed. What did it become?
IDEA
What does IDEA stand for?
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
What is IDEA?
Provides transportation services
Extended eligibility to children with autism and TBI
Added assistive technology devices
Extended provisions of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)- allowed mainstreaming
In 1997, IDEA was amended. What did the amendment account for?
Includes developmentally delayed children between ages of 3-9 years
Requires parents to attempt to resolve disputes with schools & Local Education Agencies (LEAs) through mediation, & provides a process for doing so.
Authorized additional grants for technology, disabled infants & toddlers, parent training, & professional development.
In 2004, what was IDEA amended by?
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004
What is IDEIA?
An amended version of IDEA which aligned it with No Child Left Behind, authorizing 15 states to implement 3 year IEPs on a trial basis when parents continually agree.
