Exam 2: ANS Flashcards
What does the parasympathetic nervous system maintain?
digestive, urinary, respiratory,reproductive
Where does the 1st neuron originate ?
Preganglionic
Preganglionic originates in the CNS in the lateral horn
where does the 2nd neuron originate?
meets the 1st autonomic ganglion, postganglionic neuron
What happens to Preganglionic neuron’s axon?
LH VR SN
it leaves the lateral horn, travels through ventral root into Spinal nerve
What happens to postganglionic neuron’s axon?
GR, SN, EO
leaves the chain through the gray ramus, enters spinal nerve, effector organ above diaphragm
where do preganglionic neurons in the parasympathetic nervous system orignate?
brain stem ( cranial nerve VII, IX, X) and sacral ( S2, S3, S4)
where do preganglionic neurons in the sympathetic nervous system originate?
thoracic ( T1- T12) and lumbar ( L1-L2)
What happens when chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla cells are stimulated?
release 80% epinephrine and 20% norepinephrine
What receptor is released by all preganglionic neurons and all postganglionic neurons
ACOA
Acetylcholine
the ganglia infront of the spinal cord are called?
Collateral ganglia
What is the function of Alpha receptors?
they have a greater affinity to norepinephrine than epinephrin. they are ESPS
what neurons are norepinephrine released by?
Almost all sympathetic postganglionic neurons except salivary glands
What happens when a neurotransmitter binds to nicotinic receptor?
it will cause depolarization/ ESPS
where are nicotinic receptors found?
they are found on cell bodies and dendrites of ALL postganglionic sympatheticand parasympathetic neurons
what is the function of a nicotinic receptor?
allows travels all the way to the effector organ chromatin cells of the adrenal medulla
what happens when neurotransmitters bind to muscarnic recpetors?
cause either a ESPS or IPSP response
where are muscarinic receptors found?
on the effector organs of the parasympathethic system
what is the function lg muscarinic recpetors?
controls heart smooth muscle and the diameter of the pupil
what are the two primary neurotransmitters released?
acetylcholine and norepinephrine
where does the sacaral spinal cord originate?
the preganglionic neuron origantes in the lateral gray matter lf the sacral cord. their axons use the pevlic splanchnic nerves to get a terminal or intramural ganglia og organs in the pelvic cavity
what does cranial nerve III control?
oculomotor
smooth muscle in the eye for changing pupil shape and size also focusing the lens
what does cranial nerve VII control?
facial
the 2 pairs of salivary glands
what does cranial nerve III control?
