Exam 4: urinary system Flashcards
what are the three distinct anatomt of the kidney?
C, M, N
- cortex
- medulla
- nephron
what is the cortex?
it contains 1 million renal corpuscles which filter the blood
what is the purpose of the medulla?
filtered blood is sent through the nephron then to the collecting ducts of the medulla
how many renal pyrimads make up the medulla?
8-15
what is the nephron?
the unit that modifies the blood filtrate to form urine
what is the renal corpuscle?
consists of a mass of capillaries called the glomerulus
what are the 3 parts of the renal tubule?
PCT, LOH, DCT
1) proximal convoluted tubule
2) loop of henle
3) dostal convuluted tubuld
where is the juxtaglomerular apparatus located?
DCT
what is the function of the juxtaglomerular apparatus?
a portion where the DCT comes in contact w/ adjacent arterioles
what are the 2 cells located in the juxtaglomerular apparatus?
MD, JC
1) macula densa
2) juxtaglomerular cells
what is the purpose of the macula densa?
monitor Na+ concentration
what is the purpose juxtaglomerular cells?
release renin which responds to decreased Na+
what is glomerular filtration?
filtering of the blood through the wall of glomerular capillary into the surrounding
how is blood brought into the glomerular capillaries?
afferent arterioles
what is myogenic regulation?
when MAP rises, afferent arterioles is streched, GFR rises.
