Evolution and Biodiversity (EXAM 1) Flashcards
Evolution
theory of evolution: species descend with modification from ancestral species over time. It is outlined as “Principles of Evolution” by Charles Darwin in Origins of Species by means of Natural Selection
Descent with Modification
all organsims reproduce new generations that are different from their parents generations
Overproduction
most living organisms produce far more offspring than will grow to maturity
Struggle for Existence
nature is characterized as a continual struggle for survival, in which organisms are competing with each other for space, food and mates
Survival of the Fittest
since organisms produce more offspring than will reach maturity and since there is a constant struggle for existence those organisms which are better adapted to their environment and pressures exerted by it will survive
