what are the BPS code of ethics
outlines why british psychologists must adhere to which are particularly important when involving children. these include:
- parental consent is key
- both parent and child has the right to withdraw
- Childs safety is the priority
- details of the child bus be kept confidential and the identity protected
context of the UNCRC and some articles
United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, gives children the same rights as adults and have additions to the BPS guidelines.
- a child is defined as anyone under 18
- CRC applies to any child regardless of ethnicity
- the top priory is the Childs best interest
- children and adults must know of their rights
what are the 4 principles of UNCRC
- participation, in decisions made about them
- protection, from harm
- privacy, and confidentiality
- provision, of services all that the children need
why is article 4 so important in child ethics
the article is about keeping the child safe, children are treated as vulnerable and special attention has to be paid.
Protection rights vs participation rights
these two can oppose each other.
for example, some children are prevented from participating due to sensitivity to protect them, but this goes against their participation rights.
