20 marker - Child Key Question Flashcards
what is the key question
are role models in the media to blame for the rise in AN?
key stats on AN
- 1% of the population
- 90% of cases are females
- 25% of those affected get hospitalised
what is the issue for society
can cause huge strains on family and financial costs of the NHS taking away from the budget for other disorders
Becker (Fiji)
when Tv was introduced to Fiji, girls were more conscious of there diet and body image.
SLT
people imitate role models especially ones that show power and prestigiousness. this reflects the nature of many celebrities, so girls especially are more likely to imitate the way they look which is most commonly skinny
Rosenhan and his study
his study showed that when a label is placed upon then it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. this can have effects on their later life. this explains why AN continues following diagnosis
However, gene
only 1% of the world has An when much more of the population have access to media and celebrities. this suggests that the media alone is not a full explanation so gene has been shown, EPHX2
Mumford, (Arab and Asian women)
showed that Arab and asian women who moved to western cultures had a higher incident rate of AN. this shows that western culture places an emphasis and pressures on thin women that other cultures do not have
what other study supports Mumford
Engl found that AN is mainly in white people where there is more of an emphasis on diet.
