ES 7 Flashcards
What is Le Chatelier’s Principle?
If a system is not in equilibrium, and a change is made in any of the conditions, then the system will oppose the change
What remains the same during an equilibrium reaction?
Concentration of reactants and products
What can position of equilibrium be altered by changing?
- Conc of reactants and products
- Temp
- Pressure
What sign does an exothermic reaction have?
Forward
What will increasing the temp of the system do?
Shifts the reaction in the direction of the endothermic reaction
What will decreasing the temp of the system do?
Shifts the reaction in the direction of the exothermic reaction
What would increasing the pressure of the reaction do?
Move the equilibrium to the side with fewer gas molecules as this reduces pressure
What would decreasing the pressure of the reaction do?
Moves equilibrium to the side with more gas molecules to increase the pressure
What would decreasing the concentration of products do?
Move the equilibrium to the product side
What would increasing the concentration of products do?
Move equilibrium to reactant side
What would decreasing the concentration of reactants do?
Move equilibrium to the reactant side
What would increasing the concentration of reactants do?
Move the equilibrium to the product side
What affect does a catalyst have on position of equilibrium?
None
Increases the rate at which the equilibrium is established
What are the best conditions to optimise the yield of chlorine during the Deacon process?
- Low temp
- High pressure
- Excess oxygen
Why must there be a compromise with rate of reaction during the Deacon process?
- Excess O2 is explosive
- High pressure is expensive
