DF 7 Flashcards
What is a polymer?
A long molecule made up from lots of small molecules called monomers
What is polymerisation?
Small molecules called monomers joining together to produce long-chain polymers
What to always include when drawing monomers and polymers
Monomers - n before
Polymers - n after
What happens when you ad hydrogen to carbon-carbon double bonds?
Alkanes are produced
What conditions are needed for alkanes to react with hydrogen?
150 degree Celsius + nickel catalyst + high pressure
What catalyst is need for hydrogen to react with alkenes at room temp and pressure?
A platinum catalyst
What happens in addition reactions?
- double bonds are opened up
- atoms are added
- one product is formed
What is a monomer?
A molecule that combines with many other monomers to form a polymer
What is a repeat unit?
A specific arrangement of atoms that occurs in the structure over and over again
