EL 1 Flashcards
What are the relative masses of both protons, and neutrons?
1
What are the relative masses of electrons?
1/2000
Mass number=
Protons + neutrons
Atomic number =
Protons
What are isotopes?
Atoms of the same element with different mass numbers but the same atomic number
What are the characteristics of a lightweight star?
- Smaller mass
- Lower temp/ less pressure at core
- Longer lifespan
- Can only do nuclear fusion with H & He
What was the plum pudding model?
- A positively charged sphere
- with negatively charged electrons embedded in
What does Ar mean?
Relative atomic mass (average mass of an atom of an element)
What is Mr?
Relative molecular mass - average mass of a molecule
Eg. Mr(H2O) = (1x2) + 16
How can relative mass be measured?
Using a spectrometer
How do you calculate Ar from a mass spectrum that only gives relative abundance?
For each reading do:
% isotopic abundance = (relative abundance / total relative abundance) x 100
And then continue normally
What is nuclear fusion?
The joining of two smaller nuclei to create one larger nucleus
What conditions are needed for nuclear fusion?
High temp and high pressure to overcome the nuclear repulsion
