Equipment Flashcards
Oxygen equipment
oxygen is medication and is usually delivered through a wall mounted system using a valve and flow meter
Oxygen equipment safety guidelines:
make sure there is adequate signage in pts room, avoid using electrical equipment, and make sure oxygen tubing is not a tripping hazard
Steps to take for delivery by nasal cannula:
place a nasal prong in each nostril, loop the tubing over and behind the pts ear, and adjust comfortably under the chin
Steps to take for delivery by face mask:
place mask over pts nose and mouth, place strap over pts head and behind ears, and adjust comfortably using straps and nose clips
Patients can require suctioning to:
remove mucus, blood, vomit, secretions, or other substances from their mouth and throat to keep their airway open
How do you test suction?
by inserting tip of catheter into a basin with sterile normal saline
Oropharyngeal suctioning
mouth and throat, is most common after surgery
Cardiac monitor
measures heart activity (heart rate and rhythm)
Ventilator
pumps pressurized air into a pts lungs through an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy when a pt cannot breathe on their own
Capnography monitor
measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in enhaled air
Continuous pulse oximetry
measures oxygen levels in the blood
Infusion pump
delivers a specific amount of fluids or medications directly into a pts circulatory system at a specific rate
Bariatric beds
can accommodate more weight and are wider than standard beds
Alternating pressure beds
circulate air or water under the pt, thus shifting pressure and reducing the risk for developing pressure ulcers
Airflow beds
support the pt. on a fabric layer containing small beads that are kept in constant motion by circulating air
