Body Systems Flashcards
What is the main goal of the body systems?
To maintain a state of balance called homeostasis
What does the integumentary system consist of?
Skin, including glands
What is the primary function of the integumentary system?
protection
What does the skin do?
prevents bacteria, chemicals, and foreign bodies from entering the body and allow people to feel pain, heat, cold, and pressure.
What does the skeletal system consist of?
bones and joints
What is the primary function of the skeletal system?
support
What does the muscular system consist of?
voluntary (striated) and involuntary (smooth) muscles
What is the primary function of the muscular system?
movement
What does the nervous system consist of?
the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors
What is the primary function of the nervous system?
regulate the body’s control system to maintain homeostasis
What does the endocrine system consist of?
hormone-producing glands throughout the body that regulate and effect metabolism, growth, sleep cycles, stress hormones, blood glucose levels, and reproduction
What does the cardiovascular system consist of?
the heart, blood vessels, and blood
What is the primary function of the cardiovascular system?
transport oxygen, nutrients, hormones, water, and waste products throughout the body
What does the lymphatic system consist of?
lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen, tonsils, and thymus
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system?
protect the body by filtering the blood and lymph and removing toxins that can cause infection and disease
What does the respiratory system consist of?
airway (nose, pharynx, larynx, bronchi) and lungs
What is the primary function of the respiratory system?
provide the body with a way to take in oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide
What does the digestive system consist of?
the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum, and anus
What is the primary function of the digestive system?
break down food for absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste
What does the urinary system consist of?
kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra
What is the primary function of the urinary system?
remove waste products from the blood and eliminate excess fluid from the body
What does the reproductive system do?
produces hormones related to sexual functions and procreation
What does the female reproductive system consist of?
consists of internal organs and external structures
