Disease Procedures Flashcards
When does disease occur?
when the body’s systems are not able to maintain homeostasis for some reason
Infectious disease
caused by bacteria entering the body. Ex. UTI
Acute disease
have a sudden onset and, for the most part, a short recovery time. Ex. influenza
Chronic disease
usually last longer than 6 months, and recovery most likely requires ongoing medication and treatment. Ex. Atherosclerosis
Degenerative disease
occurs when the aging process causes tissues in the body to wear down. Ex. arthritis
Osteoarthritis
most common form of joint disorder
Infections
occur when a pathogen enters the body, grows, and multiplies.
Asthma
chronic respiratory disorder characterized by constriction of the bronchi and bronchioles in the lungs due to inflammation
Pneumonia
inflammation of the lungs due to an infection in which the air sacs fill with fluid and pus, making it difficult to breathe
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
a group of chronic lung disease with which airflow to the lungs is progressively obstructed
Cancer
involves abnormal cell growth that causes tumors and can potentially spread to other parts of the body
Hypertension (High blood pressure)
when the systolic pressure is consistently 130mm Hg or higher or the diastolic pressure is 80mm Hg or higher
Expected blood pressure
Systolic- less than 120
Diastolic- less than 80
Elevated blood pressure
Systolic- 120-129
Diastolic- less than 80
High blood pressure stage 1
Systolic- 130-139
Diastolic- 80-89
