non-weight bearing
pts affected leg cannot touch the floor
touch-down weight bearing
pts affected leg can only touch the floor for balance
partial weight bearing
pts affected leg can only bear a portion of body weight
weight-bearing as tolerated
pt is able to stand/walk on affected leg, bearing the amount of body weight as tolerated
full-weight bearing
pt is able to bear full weight on affected leg
When do you avoid ambulating the patient alone? Why?
if the pt is getting out of bed for the first time, unsteady, taking narcotics, or is extremely weak to prevent a fall
Notify nurse:
shortness of breath or chest pain, experience a sudden headache, feel any new pain while walking, refuse to ambulate, or have a change in condition due to strength or ability
Transfer weight-bearing patient from bed to wheelchair
strong side to chair, place wheelchair next to the bed at a 45 degree angle facing either the head or foot of the bed, and make sure bed is in its lowest position and bed head is raised
Mechanical lift
typically have a sling and a metal frame with a hydraulic lift mechanism
Transfer board
transferring pt from a bed to a stretcher or from a stretcher to another flat surface
