Epithelium and CT Flashcards
Where does epithelial tissue derive from?
All three germ layers
What are the characteristics of Epithelial Tissue?
Avascular, Polarized, and seperated by basement membrane.
What are the characteristics of the Basement membrane?
Acelluar, Selective filter, Separation between epithelium and CT.
Where is epithelial tissue found?
Covers body surfaces, Lines cavities, and Glands.
What is the general purpose of the epithelial tissue?
Barrier.
Where are transitional cells found?
Urinary bladder.
What is Endothelium?
Simple Squamous epithleium lining in cardiovascular.
WHat is Mesothelium?
Simple Squamous epithelium that lines body cavities.
Where are simple cuboidal epithelium found?
Glands, ducts kidney
Where is simple columnar epithelium found?
Intestinal lining
What are some special characteristics of speudostratified epithelium?
Tends to be ciliated.
Where is Stratified Squamous epithelium found?
Entrances and exits of body.
What are microvili? Purpose? Made up of?
Finger-like projections. Enhance absorption. Made up of Microfiliments.
What are Sterocilia?
Elongated immovable microvili.
What is Cilia? Purpose? Made up of?
Elongated extension of cell. Moves things. Made of Microtubles.
What is the difference between exocrine and endocrine glands?
Exo=Excrete on the surface to pool Endo=Excreted through membrane and enters into vascular system.
What are the two types of exocrine glands?
Unicellular and multicellular.
How can you classify mutlicellular exocrine glands according to duct and secretory portion?
Duct: Simple and Compound Secretory: Shape=Tubular or Acinar Complexity=Coiled or Branched
Where does most connective tissue derive from?
Mesoderm/Mesenchyme
What is connective tissue made up of?
Connective tissue fibers, Ground substances, and extracellular fluid.
What fibers are in CT?
Collagen, Reticulin, And Elastin.
What are the characteristics of Collegen?
Abundant, strong, triple helix made up of Tropocollagen.
What is Reticulin?
Branched, meshlike collagen.
What are the components of elastic fibers?
Elastin core and Fibrillin.
What is ground substance? What is it made up of?
Clear slippery substance. Made of Proteoglycans (GAG).
