Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelia
Covers exposed surfaces and line internal cavities and passageways
Glands
Organized groups of cells or organs that include epithelial cells that synthesize substances for secretion
Exocrine glands
Glands that secrete onto external surfaces or into internal passageways(ducts) that connect to the exterior
Endocrine glands
Glands that secrete hormones or their precursors that enter the bloodstream for distribution to target tissues
Microvilli
Typical associated with epithelial cells that line the passageways of the digestive and urinary tracts
Motile cilia
Typically associated with epithelial cells that line the passageways respiratory and reproductive tracts
Junctional complexes
Provide support and connects cells to make sure outside substances do not penetrate deeper tissue
Simple epithelia
Single layer of cells
Stratified epithelia
Found in areas that need more protection from outside sources so there are many layers of cells
Simple squamous epithelia
Flat layer of single cells
Lungs for gas exchange
Lining in body cavities
Inner surface of heart and blood vessels
Simple cuboidal epithelia
Single layer of cubed cells
Kidney tubules
Thyroid follicles
Simple columnar epithelia
Single layer of column like cells
Small intestine
Gall bladder
Uterine tubes
Stratified squamous epithelia
Many layers of flat cells
Skin, rectum, lining of mouth, vagina
Stratified cuboidal epithelia
Many layers of cubed shaped cells
Sweat gland ducts
Mammary gland ducts
Stratified columnar epithelia
Many layers of column like cells
Pancreatic ducts
Salivary ducts
