Average age = 30-50 years old
Risk factors for eosinophilic oesophagitis
Allergies/ asthma
Male sex
FHx
Caucasian
Age 30-50
Autoimmune disease e.g. coeliac disease
Usual presentation of eosinophilic eosophagitis
Adults
- dysphagia
- strictures/ fibrosis (56%)
- food impaction (55%)
- regurgitation/ vomiting
- anorexia
Children
- failure to thrive/food refusal
Histological findings indicative of eosinophilic oesophagitis after endoscopic biopsy
> 15 eosinophils per high power microscopy field
- reduced vasculature
- thick mucosa
- mucosal furrows
- strictures
- laryngeal oedema
Management of eosinophilic oesophagitis
- Dietary modification
- Topical steroids e.g. fluticasone and budesonide
- Oesophageal dilatation if strictures present
Complications of eosinophilic oesophagitis
Oesophageal Stricture
Impaction/food bolus
Mallory-Weiss tears
