Enteric Viruses Flashcards
Most enteric viruses are naked, EXCEPT:
coronaviruses! These are enveloped and enteric
Naked virus that mainly infects the young; causes diarrheal diseases.
Rotavirus
Like flu, rotaviruses infect what cells?
columnar epithelial cells
Rotavirus is a __RNA virus.
dsRNA virus
Why doesn’t the dsRNA virus (rotavirus) induce a strong IFN response, like with the flu virus?
Because it has three capsid layers! Which keeps it protected and hidden.
What does the rotavirus do to avoid IFN response?
It does transcription within itself, and then squirts out the ssRNA to the cytoplasm. During assembly is when the dsRNA forms. So it stays hidden a lot of the time so that the immune system doesn’t detect it quickly.
Most of the time, polio is ___
asymptomatic
EV-D68 and EV-A71 is associated with:
Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM)
know there is a link between EV-D68 and AFM
(acute FLACCID –> “dick” “69”)
