Gender
sexual distinction between male and female
Patriarchy
refers to societies where men are also expected to take primary responsibility for the welfare of the community as a whole
traditional gender roles (female)
homemaker, caregiver, nuturer, peacekeeper, cooks, cleans
traditional gender roles (male)
breadwinner, protector, tough, temper, punisher
objectivication
seeing or treating a person, usually a woman, as an object
multicultural feminism
not every women’s experience is the same, oppression and the effects of patriarchy are different based on race
sisterhood
resist patriarchy - developed by a mutual feeling of oppression or by a need to resist the oppression of one of the females in the sisterhood
socioeconomic class
the combination of how much money you make, and how acceptable you are in society
instability
the oppressed are too concerned with staying alive and finding food/shelter to fight back
wealthy determine taxes
only the powerful determine the taxes
middle class resents poor
their taxes support welfare - lazy ideal is perpetuated
classism
people judge each other based on their class
patriotism
the belief in one’s country and its greatness
religion
if you believe being good now and not making trouble will reward you later, you’re less likely to revolt against the upper class
rugged individualism
the belief that you are in charge of your own destiny
consumerism
when we feel bad about ourselves we buy things to make us feel better
entertainment
lulls us into a false reality where everything is wonderful and makes us feel better for the time
conspicuous consumption
buying things to show off, and it doesn’t let you save
