Engines + APU Flashcards
How many engines are on the 737?
2 engines + 1 APU
How much thrust does each engine produce?
26,400 lbs of thrust
What model engines are on the 737?
General Electric – CFM56
What is an APU?
APU – Auxiliary Power Unit; The APU provides Bleed Air for the AC packs, electrical power, and engine start
Which fuel tank normally fuels the APU on the 737?
Tank 1 (the Left Tank)
Where is the APU located?
The APU is located in the tail section of the aircraft
How can pilots monitor the amount of thrust produced by an engine?
There is an EPR (Engine Pressure Ratio) in the cockpit that provides them with the information
How is the APU started?
Via electrical power from the battery or an outside electrical source
How do jet engines work? (Fill in the blank) Suck, Squeeze, Bang, _______.
Blow
What happens during the ‘suck’ phase of jet engine operation?
The engine fan sucks air into the engine
What happens during the ‘squeeze’ phase of jet engine operation?
This air then goes through two compressors
What happens during the ‘bang’ phase of jet engine operation?
The compressed air enters the combustion chamber where fuel is added and ignited
What happens during the ‘blow’ phase of jet engine operation?
The air (now referred to as thrust) exits the engine and is blown over the turbine blades
What causes the turbine blades to spin in a jet engine?
The thrust exiting the engine over the turbine blades
What is attached to the turbine blades that helps turn the fan?
A shaft which runs up to the front of the engine
