Engine Flashcards
How does fuel get from the fuel tanks to the engine
low pressure pump - returns to fuel tank as motive flow
high pressure pump - flows through fuel/oil heat exchanger to fuel filter then Fuel Metering Unit (FMU) then through high pressure pump before returning to FMU
Describe the FMU
controlled by the FADEC, meters and distributes the proper amount of fuel for combustion and controls shutoff valve
Describe the Variable Geometry Actuator
consists of two fuel driven actuators controlled by the FADEC via FMU, optimizes position of compressor stators for efficiency
The engine starting system is comprised of:
- air turbine starter
- starter control valve
How many igniters are used for start
ground - one
air - both (2)
Does the FADEC provide abnormal engine start protection in the air
NO
Describe the auto relight function
turns on both igniters and schedules the relight fuel flow in the event of engine flame out or if N2 falls below 52%; “WML” icon is displayed next to N2
How is the thrust reverser system actuated and controlled
hydraulically actuated, control via thrust lever
What does the T2 sensor monitor
engine air inlet temperature for use in FADEC control calculations
What does the N1 sensor provide
fan speed data and airplane vibration monitoring
How is the FADEC powered
above 50% N2 - Permanent Magnet Alternator (PMA)
below 50% N2 - electrical system
The FADEC provides engine start protection on the ground as follows:
- hung start
- hot start
- no light off
Describe the FADEC overspeed protection
commands engine shutdown when N2 reaches 102%, relights when within limits (unless 3 consecutive overspeeds)
Describe the FADEC overtemp protection
controls ITT limits for engine start and throughout operation; will not allow fuel flow during start if ITT is above 120C
Describe the ATTCS
available for takeoff and go around; automatically commands RSV when it is armed and thrust levers are at TOGA and one of the following occurs:
- difference between N1 values is greater than 15%
- one engine failure during takeoff
- one engine failure during go-around
- windshear detection
