Energy Transfer in the bioshpere Flashcards
What is ecology?
The relationship between organisms and their enviorments
What does Ecology link?
Technology, culture and nature
What is an open system?
Allows for the transfer of matter and energy
What is a closed system?
Allows for the trasnfer of energy but not matter.
What is an isolated system?
Doesn’t allow for the transfer of energy or matter - not realistically possible
What is the biosphere?
The part of earth in which living organims exist or that is capable of supporting life.
What three parts that compose the bioshpere?
Atmosphere - Gaseous part of the biosphere. Concentrated within 10KM of earths surfacesphere - Solid part of the earth
Hydorshpere - Solid and Liquid water enviroment that support life
What is dynamic equilibrium?
Small adjustments are made to keep the whole system stable
What happens if dynamic equilb
The number of healthy species of organims are affected. This is tracked by indicator spcies that provide warning about the factor that effects them
What is the first law of thermodynamics?
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed only trasnferd from one form ot another.
What is the second law of thermodynamics?
In every energy conversion energy is lost and less energy is available for the next conversion
- No energy conversion is 100% efficient
- Much of the energy lost is unstable heat
where does most of the eneregy from the bioshpere come from?
Sun
