Energy systems Flashcards

1
Q

Carbs

A

Stored in muscle and liver cells in form of glycogen

should provide around 50 to 60% energy

Q

Fat

A

Stored beneath the skin (adipose)
composed of triglyceride molecules that are broken down into fatty acids to release energy
should provide around 30% energy

Q

ATP breakdown

A

When ATP loses one of its phosphate bonds, energy is produced
This is then converted to ADP
ADP is resysnthesised back into ATP by coupled reactions

Q

Phosphocreatine energy system

A

When the high energy phosphate bond in creatine phosphate is broken down, the released energy is immediately used to resynthesises ATP

E.g shot put

Q

Lactic acid system

A

Utilises glycogen in the absence of oxygen to make ATP

Glycogen is stored in limited amounts within the muscle and is broken down to pyruvate and then to ATP

Q

Aerobic system

A

Uses a mixture of glucose and fatty acids
Amino acids can also be used when carbs low
Mitochondria
