Energy Production Flashcards
Hydro electric
Pros - renewable, large amount of power for a low cost, no fuel cost, can have a secondary purpose e.g water reserve
Cons - expensive to build, can only be used in certain locations, may destroy habitat
Biomas
Pros - renewable, waste from plants + farming can be used, doesn’t give off harmful chemicals
Cons - emits pollution, large areas if land are needed to produce the fuel
Tidal
Pros - renewable, no emissions, tides are predictable, can have a second purpose such as a bridge
Cons - lower energy output that fossil fuels, can impact the environment, causes coastal erosion, expensive to build, only by coast
Solar
Pros - renewable, no emissions, can be used anywhere
Cons - could change ecology, unpredictable output, expensive to start
Oil
Pros - stable output, cheaper to start, easy to extract fuel
Cons - greenhouse emissions, will run out, mining destroys habitat, risks with mining
Gas
Pros - stable output, large energy output, relatively cheap to extract fuel, cleaner than coal or oil
Cons - will run out, greenhouse emissions,
Wind
Pros - freely available, renewable, can be used anywhere, no emissions
Cons - wind is inconsistent, if at sea it can restrict shipping lanes, visual and sound pollution, expensive to set up
Bio diesel
Pros - renewable, waste from plants and farming can be used, doesn’t give off harmful chemicals
Cons - large areas need to cultivate crops, emits pollution
Coal
Pros - reliable power output, large power output, cheap to extract
Cons - will run out, emits pollution, mining destroys landscape, risks of mining
