8
Q

How does a goiter develop

A

hypo: low T3 and T4
-tells hypothalamus to make TRH, and AP to make TSH and TSH ahs trophic effects on the thyroid gland which causes it to swell

hper: AP is overactive with TSH and TSH causes T3 and T4 and increases thyroid size

Q

Functions of adrenal catecholamines durin stress

A

mobilizes glucose for energy
mobilizes fatty acids for energy

Q

3 clade cascade of stress

14
Q

Physiological functions of cortisol ( basal or non stress levels)

A
  • metabolic effects: liver glucose production between meals
-permissive of adrenerguc receptors in the cardiovascular system
  • anti inflammatory/anti immune
-fetal development of brain, intestines, lungs, glands

15
Q

Functions of cortisol in stress

A

-catabolizes body stores of nutrients
-bone restoration
-support sympathetic responses related to vasoconstriction
-stimulates erythropoietin: replace RBC’s if bleeding out
-anti-inflammatory/immunosuppression
-inhibtion of non essential functions

16
Q

Adrenal insufficiency

A

cortisol hyposecretion

17
Q

Primary adrenal insufficiency (addison’s disease)
causes

A

destructive tumors, infections, or autoimmune destruction

18
Q

Results of primary adrenal insufficiency

A

hypotension, low blood glucose, high plasma ACTH and high CRH

19
Q

causes of secondary adrenal insufficiency

A

AP dysfunction, loss of ACTH

20
Q

Results of secondary adrenal insufficiency

A

similar symptoms as in primary adrenal insufficiency but with low plasma ACTH

21
Q

What is cushings disease

A

cortisol hypersecretion

22
Q

What is cushing’s caused by?

A

hyper secreting tumors of adrenal and AP

23
Q

Results of cushing’s disease

A

osteoporosis, thin skin, muscle weakness, high blood glucose
-affects cortisol levels in the blood (hypercortisolism)
disease: ACTH secreting tumor on AP

24
Q

Aldosterone

A

increases sodium retention and blood pressure

25
Q

Vasopressin

A

increases water retention and blood pressue

26
Q

Growth hormone

A

breaks down fast and mobilizes blood glucose

27
Q

Beta endorphin

A

pain reliever/mood elevation

28
Q

Insulin during stress

A

decreases; with less insulin the levels of glucose, fatty acids and amino acids in the plasma increase
