Empiric Therapies Flashcards
What is the empiric therapy of fever of unknown origin when the CSF status is known or unknown?
Known normal CSF: IV flucloxacillin and gent
If unknown CSF: IV Flucloxacillin and ceftaxime
Empiric therapy for UTI
Not sick: oral trimethoprim or co-trimoxazole
Sick: IV benzylpenicillin and gent
Pneumonia
Mild: oral amoxicillin or roxithromycin if considering mycoplasma
Moderate: IV benzylpenicillin or PO roxithromycin if considering mycoplasma
Severe: Flucloxacillin iv and Gent iv and Azithromycin iv If considering Mycoplasma
Meningitis
Ceftriaxone IV
If less than 2 months use cefotaxime and benzylipenicillin
Encephalitis
Aciclovir
Ottitis media
Consider no antibiotics for 48 hrs (especially if >2y old) or
Amoxycillin 15 mg/kg (500 mg) po 8H
Osteomyelitis
Flucloxacillin
And cefotaxime if less than 5 or non-Hib immunised
