When to not administer emetics
If toxin is caustic or corrosive
Petroleum Distillate - high chance of aspiration
If it has a medical condition that makes inducing emesis risky
Emetics: effectiveness
Most effective of given within 2-3 hours of ingestion
Only empties 40-60% of stomach contents
Apomorphine: effect, use, administration (2), caution
Dopamine against - stimulates receptors in CTZ
Use: induce emesis in dogs
Injectable
Tablets - crushed and placed in conjunctival sack
Not recommended in cats - not effected and can cause excitatory behavior
Alpha2-Adrenergic Agonists: effect, use
Stimulates receptors in cats CTZ
Induce emesis in cats
Ropinirole: brand name, effect, use, administration
Clevor
Stimulates dopamine receptors in CTZ
Induce emesis in dogs
Dropper applied to conjunctival sac
Hydrogen Peroxide: effect, use, cautions (3)
Irritates gastric mucosa
Induce emesis in dogs
Only effective if fresh and fizzy
Do not dose repeatedly, can cause gastric ulcers
Do not use in cats - increased risk of stomach ulcers, does not work.
Syrup of Ipecac: effect, cautions (3)
Irritate the stomach lining
Poor efficiency
Can’t take up to 40 min to work
Of not vomited, risk of hypotension and cardiac toxicity
