Embryology Flashcards
What is mesenchyme?
Embryonic connective tissue
Where does the neck develop from?
Branchial/pharyngeal arches
Where does the face develop from?
5 mesenchymal processes/prominences
What’re the 5 mesenchymal prominences?
Frontonasal
2x maxillary
2x mandibular
Where does the skull develop from?
Develops from mesenchyme in the head region of developing embryo
Where are the somites derived from?
Paraxial mesoderm
What do the somites form?
Axial skeleton and muscles
How many somites are there in total?
33
How many branchial arches are there?
6, but number 5 disappears
1st branchial arch nerve supply?
V3
2nd branchial arch nerve supply?
Facial
All facial muscles innervated by this so all must be derived from 2nd arch
3rd branchial arch nerve supply?
Glossopharyngeal
4th branchial arch nerve supply?
Superior laryngeal of vagus
6th branchial arch nerve supply?
Recurrent laryngeal of vagus
How’re the flat bones of the skull ossified?
Membranous ossification
