Elimination of Drugs (Pharmacokinetics) Flashcards

1
Q

Zero Order Kinetics means what

A

That the rate of elimination is constant regardless of the concentration of the drug. Concentration decreases linearly with time.

  • Drugs that follow the zero-order kinetic policy=
“PEAs are 0” Phenytoin, Ethanol, Aspirin

So your beer is eliminated at a constant rate

Q

First Order means what

A

Rate of elimination is directly proportional to the drug concentration. Decreases exponentially with time….a constant fraction is eliminated with time (say 50% every hour)

Q

What types of drugs get trapped in the urine?

A

Ionized drugs- Because ionized (charged) drugs are hydrophilic whereas neutral drugs are lipophilic. Because they are hydrophilic, they are trapped in the urine and can’t get through the lipid bilayers to be reabsorbed, thus…eliminated in urine
