Scopolamine mechanism
Muscarinic antagonist
Used for motion sickness, drug of choice.
Think of dad on the boat in keys. Needed scopolamine
Promethazine
This is phenergran….it is a neuroleptic and has strong sedative effects but does prevent emesis. Just don’t give it to someone who needs to stay awake
Metoclopramide
D2 receptor antagonist (remember the D2 receptor modulates neurotransmitter receptor release in the brain). Increases Resting tone of the LES. Doesn’t restrict colonic flow
Used as an antiemetic
Toxicity: increased parkinsonian effects. Restlessness, drowsiness, fatigue, depression, nausea, diarrhea
Ondansetron
Serotonin receptor antagonist….powerful central acting antiemetic
Used to control vomiting in post-op pts and in chemo pts
Toxicity: headache and constipation
