What are benefits of EM?

rapid
can use multiple different sample types
can find virus even when you are not sure what you are looking for
usually used if others methods are exhausted, or as part of novel virus discovery
detects viruses which do not grow in culture

Cost - equipment/ maintenance
Need trained operators
May find pathogens there, which are not actually causing disease
