Sodium (regulation, main function and target organ)
regulated by kidney, GI and skin
main function: fluid regulation
target organ: brain
Potassium (regulation, main function and target organ)
main function: smooth electrical conduction to the muscles and contract heart
target organ: heart
Hypokalemia sighs and symptoms
Cardiac arrhythmias
Tachycardia
Treatment of hypokalemia
Never give a rapid administration of potassium
I’ve missed be given slow and diluted
Hyperkalemia signs and symptoms
Dysthymias
Bradycardia
Treatment for hyperkalemia
Never give IV push
Calcium normal range
8.5-10.5 mg/dL
Parathyroid hormone
Raises calcium levels by pulling it from the bone
Calcitonin hormone
Calcium lowers by storing it in bones
Calcium and phosphate relationships
Ex: As calcium increases phosphate decreases
Hypocalcemia signs and symptoms
Spastic muscle or increase muscle contraction
