Cancer Flashcards
Cancer
A disorder of altered cell differentiation and growth
Neoplasm
New growth rising from Neoplasia
Neoplasia
Altered growth and differentiation
(Abnormal growth)
Can be benign or malignant
Proliferation
Process of cell division, inherit adaptive process for cell replacement or the need of additional cells
(Spreading)
Differentiation
Process of specialization of cells
Cells roll
Benign neoplasm
Well differentiated, resemble counterpart but have lost ability to control proliferation
Malignant neoplasm
Less differentiated, lost ability to control cell proliferation and differentiation
Parenchymal cells
Specific functional cells of an organ or tissue
Anaplasia
Poorly differentiated cells
Angiogenesis
Makes own blood supply and tumor bleeds
Fibroma
Benign tumor of fibrous tissue
Carcinoma
Cancer
Polyps
Usually Benigno
Early signs of carcinogenesis
C: change in blower or bladder habits A: a legion that does not hwal U: unusual bleeding or dia hard I: indigestion of difficulty swallowing O obvious change in wart or mole NNagging cough or persistent hoarseness
Nodules
Nodes, # tells you how many lymph nodes are involved
N0= no nodes involved
N1= mobile nodes involved
N2= fixed nodes involved
Sentinel node mapping is often done during surgery to limit lymph node excision
