Elbow, Cubital Fossa, and Forearm Flashcards
2 joints of elbow area
- elbow joint (hinging, flexion, extension)
2. proximal radio-ulnar joint (pronation and supination)
3 articulations of elbow area
- trochlear notch of ulna and trochlea of humerus (elbow joint)
- head of radius and capitulum of humerus (elbow joint)
- head of radius and radial notch of ulna
what type of tissue are the ligaments of the elbow area made of?
dense regular connective tissue
what are the three ligament of the elbow area?
- radial collateral ligament
- ulnar collateral ligament
- anular ligament
what does the radial collateral ligament do?
resists varus (from midline) forces
what does the ulnar collateral ligament do?
resists valgus (toward midline) forces
what does the anular ligament do?
connects radius to ulna
What is nursemaid’s elbow?
head of radius displaces from anular ligament
what is involved in vascular supply to the elbow area?
brachial a., profunda brachii, radial a., ulnar a.
what does the superior ulnar collateral a. anastomose with?
posterior ulnar recurrent a.
what does the inferior ulnar collateral a. anastomose with?
anterior ulnar a.
what does the middle collateral a. anastomose with?
recurrent interosseous a.
what does the radial collateral a. anastomose with?
radial recurrent a.
what are the borders of the cubital fossa?
lat: brachioradialis m.
base: “line” from med to lat epicondyle
med: pronator teres m.
floor: brachialis m.
roof: bicipital apo., deep fascia, superficial fascia, skin
contents of cubital fossa
tendon of biceps brachii, brachial a., median n
from lateral to medial
where does the median n. exit the cubital fossa?
through 2 heads of pronator teres
what is the only major structure passing through the elbow posteriorly?
ulnar n. (posterior to medial epicondyle
what is the lateral cutaneous n. a continuation of?
musculocutaneous n.
what are the three layers of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
superficial, intermediate, deep
what is the innervation of the anterior compartment of the forearm?
median n. EXCEPT for flexor carpi ulnaris and 1/2 of flexor digitorum profundum
