EH2 Week 7 Flashcards
Differentiate between chronological age and functional age
Chronological age: exact age from birth
Functional age: age in terms of functional performance
Describe the three programmed theories
1) Programmed Longevity
2) Endocrine Theory
3) Immunological Theory
1) Programmed Longevity: Age is caused by the switching of genes on and off over time
2) Endocrine Theory: Hormones control the changes in aging
3) Immunological Theory: The immune system will decline overtime, therefore people will be more susceptible to diseases
Differentiate between Crystallized and Fluid Intelligence
Crystallized Intelligence: based on pre-existing knowledge
Fluid Intelligence: ability to solve novel problems without prior knowledge
Explain Biological Aging
1) Reduction in organ systems
2) Decline in cellular activity
Describe the two non-programmed theories
1) Free Radicals
2) Wear and Tear
1) Free Radicals: cell damage which impairs function, build-up of chemical products produced by metabolizing cells
2) Wear and Tear: Cells and tissues simply wear out, damage at the molecular level, caused by internal and external stressors
Define Ageism
Ageism: prejudice and discrimination based on someone’s age
What are the four health conditions found in older people?
A) Arthritis
B) Depression
C) Sleep Disorders
D) Respiratory Disorders
Discuss the inequalities in access to health services affecting the elderly
1) Small resident workforce
2) Training staff are hard to recruit
3) Longer distances to travel
4) Lack of residential care in rural and remote locations
Explain Telehealth
Using advanced telecommunications to exchange health information and provide healthcare services over geographic, time, social and cultural barriers
What are the two ways death is determined?
Cardiac Death: The end or circulation of blood, the heart stops beating
Brain Death: Loss of brain function
What are the advantages and disadvantages of an advance health directive?
1) Advantages: respecting the person’s wishes to advocate for self
2) Disadvantages: disagreement of family members to respect the wishes of the family, breaking the bad news
