EdVI SUCCESSION Flashcards
WHEN did EdVI die?
July 1553
WHAT did the 1544 Succession Act say about the line to the throne?
That Edward was first in line, then Mary and then Elizabeth. HVIII had excluded the Howards who could potentially reverse Royal Supremacy because they were Catholic.
WHY did Northumberland not want Princess Mary to rule after EdVI died?
She was Catholic and so she would sweep aside any Protestants in power (Northumberland)
WHAT was Northumberland’s plan for succession?
Because Princess Mary had been illegitimate for a while, and HVIII’s will had not dismissed his sister Mary’s family’s potential claims, he planned to put Lady Jane Grey into power.
WHAT was the ‘devyse’?
What EdVI wrote (Northumberland’s plan) to change the succession. It passed the throne to Lady Jane Grey and her ‘heirs male’
WHO did Lady Jane Grey marry before she became queen?
Northumberland’s son, 6 weeks before EdVI died
HOW LONG did Lady Jane Grey ‘reign’ for?
9 days
WHY did the people accept Mary as queen instead of Jane?
- Provinces outside of London were more traditional (less Protestant)
- However, the difference of religion seemed to have little importance
- The events of 1553 were seen as evidence that Mary was God’s choice, not a usurper
- Mary was lawfully the heir, and so people back the law
WHAT happened to Lady Jane Grey and Northumberland once Mary I came to power?
1) Northumberland: executed soon after his arrest
2) Lady Jane: arrested and eventually executed because Mary saw that Jane would continue to represent a Protestant hope if she stayed alive
WHAT does the Succession Crisis of 1553 prove about England’s stability at the time?
It proved both England’s vulnerability to political disruption, but also the Tudor dynasty’s stability as the only successful coup lasted 9 days
