a refusal to maintain a minimal body weight, fear of gaining weight
Who does anorexia nervosa affect and when in life?
mainly adolescent women, happens in early-middle teens, because they don’t know how to cope with stress
What are two ways that people with anorexia control their calorie intake?
- restricted type of anorexia
- binge eating / purging
How does stress affect anorexia nervosa?
dysregulation in the HPA axis, difficulty in establishing whether the HPA axis abnormalities are related to starvation and weight loss or to AN itself.
What are the symptoms of bulimia nervosa?
- fear of loss of control over eating
- excessive concern with body shape and weigh
- consuming large amounts of food at one time
What are the main features?
recurrent episodes of binge eating followed by periods of purging or fasting
Who does bulimia affect and when in life?
ten times more females than males, happens in late adolescence or early adulthood
What did the study of Levine et al. demsonstrate?
that anyone under stress will have a tendency to binge
What are the symptoms of bigne eating?
- fear of loss of control over eating
- bingeing (reoccuring episodes)
- feelings of disgust
- poor self esteem
When does binge eating start and who does it affect?
majority of sufferers are women, but not much: 3:2, during late adolescence and early adulthood
Why is binge eating related to stress?
binge eating serves as an escape from aversive self-awarness or an attempt to elevate mood
What does stress have to do with obesity?
obese women show alterations in the HPA axis, increased cortisol level can produce insulin resistance and promote visceral fat accumulation
What is coping?
thoughts and behaviours an individual uses to manage, tolerate or reduce interal or external demands
What are all eating disorders a consequence to?
consequence of stress combination with social presssure and an individuals inability to cope
