how to view otodectes
drop of mineral oil on slide
may use cover slip
view immediately on 4-10x power
otitis externa
conformation: floppy ears, excess hair, excess glandular tissue
increased moisture increases risk: bathing, swimming, humidity
blockage: polyps, tumors, foreign bodies
primary cause: allergies, dermatitis, food sensitivities, parasites
secondary infections: bacteria, yeast (tx: antifungal, steroid)
CS: head shaking, pruritis, odor, discharge, hematoma, pain, head tilt
ear swab and cytology
sample before ear cleaning
roll sample onto slide
fix
diff quick stain
dry
evaluate on 100x (oil) and always quantify
microscopy
organisms: mites (otodectes), bacteria (ex: rods, cocci)
yeast: (malassezia)
cells: leukocytes (inflammation/infection), erythrocytes (trauma), epithelial cells
