E1-Complement System Flashcards
What two antibodies trigger the CLASSICAL complement system?
IgG, IgM
What crazy things can spark the ALTERNATE complement system?
Bee, snake venom
What are the three sequential steps of the complement system?
RAM 1. Recognition Unit 2. Activation Unit 3. Membrane Attack Unit
What is the name of the recognition complex? How many molecules are involved? What are their names?
C1…Its a TRImolecular Complex and they are C1q, C1r, and C1s
Which portion of the immunoglobulin does C1q bind to to start the Recognition? What are the ONLY two Ig’s that C1q can bind to?
the FC site of the Ig!! (Remember the Fab is on the tops of the Y and they are on the bacterium!!)…C1q can only bind to IgG and IgM
What does C1q do to C1r?
C1q ACTIVATES C1r
What does C1r do to C1s?
C1r ACTIVATES C1s
What does C1s activate? What is formed?
C4 and then C2…A BIMOLECULAR complex is formed (C4-C2
What is the first step of the Activation Unit?
the C4-C2 complex binds to the bacterium
What does C4-C2 activate? What is C4-C2’s nickname?
C3…“C3 Convertase”
What does C3 convertase (C4-C2) split C3 into? Which one is larger?
Splits C3 into the smAller C3a, and the larBger C3b
What does C3a biochemically function as?
an Ana-phylac-toxin (ANAPHYLAXSIS?!)
What are the two complement components that act as ANA-PHYLAC-TOXINs?
C3a and C5a
What do anaphylactoxins do with mast cells?
Degranulates them and releases histamine
What cause the release of hydrolytic enzymes from PMNs?
Anaphylactoxins
