What is the pathology of ductal breast papilloma?

A
  • Branching fibrovascular core with overlying epithelial and myoepithelial layers
  • 2 types: central and peripheral
  • Central = solitary and ↓ risk
  • Peripheral = multiple and ↑ risk
  • Atypical cells = ↑ risk of developing breast cancer

  • Wart like lump – usually close to the nipple
  • Breast enlargement
  • Pain/discomfort in breast

  • Breast examination
  • Mammogram
  • US – most likely if under the age of 40
  • Fine needle aspiration/biopsy

  • Excision biopsy
  • Microdochectomy – removal of the affected duct(s)
  • Total duct excision
