What is the definition of ductal breast papilloma?
A
Benign growth in the milk ducts

What is the pathology of ductal breast papilloma?
A
- Branching fibrovascular core with overlying epithelial and myoepithelial layers
- 2 types: central and peripheral
- Central = solitary and ↓ risk
- Peripheral = multiple and ↑ risk
- Atypical cells = ↑ risk of developing breast cancer

- Woman
* Over 40

What are the signs/symptoms of ductal breast papilloma?
A
- Nipple discharge – blood stained
- Wart like lump – usually close to the nipple
- Breast enlargement
- Pain/discomfort in breast

What investigations are carried out for suspected ductal breast papilloma?
A
- Breast examination
- Mammogram
- US – most likely if under the age of 40
- Fine needle aspiration/biopsy
- Microscopy of discharge

What are the surgical treatments for ductal breast papilloma?
A
- Excision biopsy
- Microdochectomy – removal of the affected duct(s)
- Total duct excision
